How Do We Write a Constitution

Each group is different; therefore it is important that the constitution reflects the aims of local people that the group seeks to represent.

You may wish to adopt a ‘model constitution’ used by other groups without first establishing what is wanted or needed by your particular group.

When drawing up your constitution the following items should be included:

1. The name of the group

2. The area covered by the group

3. The aims and objectives of the group

4. An equal opportunities statement

5. Membership details

6. Meeting arrangements

7. Financial controls

8. Information to members

9. How the constitution can be changed

10. Dissolution arrangements

It may also be useful to draw up job descriptions for committee members so that there is no misunderstanding later on.
